My name is Sandra Downs and I am running for Sheriff of Monroe County. Please feel free to call me Sandy.
I am the mother of 6 children who all love the Keys. Though one is deceased, his enthusiasm for the Keys still lives on. My other children range in age from 10 to 32 with their passions and progress listed below. 10 year old student, entertainer and sportsman 17 year old student, fisherman and artist 25 year old fisherman 26 year old physician assistant, animal lover and is engaged and is our only daughter 32 year old biologist, wildlife management and married with lots of animals.
I am married to Nick Downs who is the “Tarzan” of Tarzan Tree Care, Inc. He is passionate about preserving our environment. You may meet him at Glad Tidings on the weekdays when they feed the homeless as he is there cooking most every week. He rejoices in his ability to serve the underprivileged and needy. He studies Spanish daily, and appreciates those who speak and help him learn the language.
We own a home on Cudjoe Key. My 3 youngest sons live with us. Sometimes the youngest is away doing theater performances. He recently starred as Oliver in Oliver. He has been in 4 productions thus far in Hilton Head Island at the Main Street Theater. He was the 2006 Pee Wee Grand Master Fishing champion of the Florida Keys. But what he loves most is sports, and hopes to be a professional baseball catcher for the Braves someday.
The 25 year old son has taught us all to fish, and has coached his brothers to their wins. He is a fishing artist, and has taught us all such respect for the water, the fish and the fishermen. He hopes to buy his commercial licenses and fish forever. It is perhaps the toughest job down here. The hours are long, the job is dangerous and the pay is so little. Pray for the fishermen and fisherwomen!
The oldest son will return to the Keys to work in the environmental field when he finishes his doctorate at the University of Florida. His wife is Cuban and a 3rd grade teacher in Gainesville. Both look forward to returning to the Keys upon son’s completion of his Doctorate degree. Both are fluent in English and Spanish. During the time they lived here, they were recipients of the Heroes for Animals award.
The only daughter is a physician assistant currently working at Lower Keys Medical Center in the surgery department. She hopes to open up a not-for-profit health clinic for the under or un-insured in the Florida Keys in the future. Her fiancé moved from South Carolina to be with her and loves the Keys as well. He is employed here and they have planned their wedding for this spring. |
